Even as Hawaii is every bit the paradise it has been made out to be, what is also true is that the primordial forces that created it are still fully in evidence. It is a land of contrasts, the lushness of the plant life and the starkness of the volcanic landscapes, the light greens burning to brown of the brush on the western, dry side of the island and the dark soil. This, for me, imparts a dynamic tension to the environment. That is what I’ve sought to convey.
